We built this reference because too many consulting firms hide behind jargon. Every term below reflects how we actually work with clients, not how a textbook defines it. Browse the table, then decide whether our approach fits your situation.
Core advisory terms
These are the concepts that come up in almost every engagement we run. We have listed them in the order a typical client encounters them, from first conversation through to sustained results.
Term
What it means in practice
Diagnostic review
A structured two-week assessment of your operations, finances and market position. We interview key staff, review data and deliver a written report with prioritised recommendations. Not a vague "discovery phase" — you get a document you can act on.
Stakeholder mapping
Identifying every person whose decisions affect your project's success, then charting their influence and interests. We use this to prevent surprises three months into an initiative.
Value chain analysis
Tracing every activity from raw input to customer delivery, then measuring where margin is created and where it leaks. Useful when you suspect costs are rising but cannot pinpoint the source.
Operating model
The combination of structure, governance and processes that determines how your organisation delivers its strategy. We redesign operating models when growth outpaces the original setup.
Change readiness
A scored assessment of how prepared your people, systems and culture are for a specific transformation. Scores below 60% usually mean we need to invest in communication and training before launching anything.
KPI alignment
Making sure every team's performance indicators connect back to the company's top-level goals. Misaligned KPIs are the single most common reason strategies fail at the execution stage.
Advisory frameworks we use
Each framework below maps to a different client challenge. We do not apply all of them to every engagement. The right one depends on your situation.
Growth architecture
For companies with revenue between £2m and £25m that have hit a ceiling. We map your current revenue engine, identify the constraint, and design a 12-month growth plan with quarterly checkpoints. Average client revenue increase after 18 months: 31%.
Margin recovery
When profitability has eroded despite stable or growing revenue. We audit procurement, pricing, overhead allocation and operational waste. One manufacturing client recovered £420k in annual margin within seven months.
Leadership alignment
Facilitated sessions that get founders and senior teams onto the same page about priorities, roles and decision rights. Usually two days on-site plus follow-up coaching.
Market entry planning
Structured feasibility work for companies entering a new geography or vertical. Covers regulatory landscape, competitor mapping, channel selection and financial modelling. We have supported entries into 14 markets across Europe and the Middle East.
Post-acquisition integration
Bringing two organisations together without losing the people or customers that made the deal worthwhile. We handle culture alignment, systems consolidation and communication planning for the first 100 days.
"The growth architecture framework gave us a clear sequence of moves instead of a wish list. Revenue grew 28% in the first year."
— R. Thornton, managing director, logistics firm, Cardiff
We work from Wales and serve clients across the UK. Most engagements start with a 30-minute call and a diagnostic review.
Is this the right fit?
We are selective about the work we take on. That protects your time and ours. Here is a quick way to tell whether a conversation makes sense.
Good fit
Probably not
Revenue above £1m and a leadership team ready to act on findings
Pre-revenue startups looking for a business plan writer
Specific challenge you can describe in a sentence
Vague feeling that "something needs to change"
Budget allocated for external advisory work
Hoping a free consultation will solve the problem
Willingness to share financial and operational data
Need a consultant who will work with no access to numbers
"They told us honestly that our problem was a hiring issue, not a strategy issue, and pointed us to the right recruiter. That kind of directness saved us months."
— D. Anwar, COO, SaaS company, Bristol
Insight board
Short observations from recent advisory work. We publish these to give prospective clients a feel for how we think.
Pricing courage
A Welsh food manufacturer had not raised prices in four years despite ingredient costs climbing 22%. We modelled three pricing scenarios, tested customer sensitivity through a controlled pilot, and implemented a 9% increase. Customer churn was 1.4%. Annual margin improved by £185k.
Board dynamics
A family-owned construction firm brought us in because board meetings had become unproductive. The root cause was unclear decision rights between the founder and the newly appointed CEO. Two facilitated sessions and a written governance charter resolved the tension. Meeting duration dropped from three hours to 75 minutes.
Technology distraction
A professional services firm was about to spend £300k on a new CRM. Our diagnostic showed the real bottleneck was the sales process itself: leads were qualified poorly and follow-up was inconsistent. We redesigned the sales workflow first, then helped them select a CRM at a third of the original budget.
If any of the terms, frameworks or case notes above resonated with a challenge you are facing, the next step is a short conversation. No pitch deck, no obligation.
Deeper terms for readers who want to understand the full consulting vocabulary before engaging.
Scenario planning
Building three to five plausible future states for your market, then stress-testing your strategy against each one. We use scenario planning when a client faces high uncertainty — regulatory change, technology disruption, or a volatile supply chain. The output is a set of contingency moves, not a single rigid plan.
Balanced scorecard
A performance management tool that tracks financial results alongside customer satisfaction, internal process efficiency and organisational learning. We adapt the classic Kaplan-Norton model to fit companies with fewer than 500 employees, keeping the indicator count manageable.
Root cause analysis
A structured method for tracing a recurring problem back to its origin rather than treating symptoms. We typically use the "five whys" technique combined with process mapping. Useful for quality issues, customer complaints or repeated project delays.
Benchmarking
Comparing your performance data against industry peers or best-in-class companies. We source benchmark data from trade bodies, published accounts and our own client database (anonymised). The goal is to identify where your numbers diverge significantly from the norm and understand why.
Succession planning
Preparing for leadership transitions before they become emergencies. We assess internal candidates, identify development gaps and create a timeline. For family businesses, this often involves difficult conversations about capability versus entitlement.
How we engage
"We started with a diagnostic, then moved to a retainer. The transition was smooth because the same consultant stayed on our account."
— P. Hargreaves, finance director, engineering firm, Swansea

Decision prompts
Questions we often hear from prospective clients, answered directly.
How long does a typical engagement last?
Diagnostics take two weeks. Advisory retainers run three months minimum. Project work varies: a market entry plan might take six weeks, while an operating model redesign could span four months. We agree timelines before signing anything.
Do you work with companies outside Wales?
Yes. About half our clients are based elsewhere in the UK. We travel for on-site work and run remote sessions when that makes more sense. The initial diagnostic can be done entirely remotely if needed.
What industries do you cover?
Manufacturing, professional services, technology, construction and food production make up most of our portfolio. We decline work in sectors where we lack relevant experience — we will tell you upfront if that is the case.
Can we start with just the diagnostic?
Absolutely. Many clients do. The diagnostic is designed to stand alone. If you decide to continue with implementation support, the diagnostic findings feed directly into the next phase.
